Brooklyn Personal Trainer Reveals The Truth About Losing Belly Fat
It’s about that time of year where summer is winding down, bbq’s are done, people are spending less time outside. With that also comes realization that either you were proud to show of your body or you made every effort to cover up.
The question I get asked the most is how do I lose the belly fat? If I do 100 crunches a day will I lose it? If I just focused on my stomach will it get flatter?
The truth is NO! It doesn’t matter how many crunches you do it still won’t cause you to lose the belly fat.
In order to achieve a flat stomach you must focus on these 4 components:
Nutrition: You are what you eat. If your eating fat, your going to have fat stomach. You want to make sure you focus on foods that are nutrient dense (foods that have a vitamin, carbohydrate, and protein) and food that is low in sodium. You can get all this information from the back of reading food labels.
Cardiovascular: Now I’m not just talking about running on the treadmill for an hour. I’m talking about REAL cardio where you are challenging yourself. If you don’t have a treadmill one of the easiest things you can do is find a hill or stairs in your neighborhood and walk or run really fast up and down for about 30 minutes. Now you are really getting your heart rate up and thus burning fat!
Strength Training: Your abs are just like any other muscle group in your body. If you over train it you will risk serious injury. At the same time getting a flat stomach doesn’t mean you just have to train only them. Its a total body effort! No matter what excercise your doing you should always focus on keeping your abs contracted. This does 2 things 1) It prevents you from using your back thus engaging your core. 2) Helps you work your abs more.
Here’s a simple abs/cardio routine that you can do right now that will help you get a flat stomach.
First off you want to make sure you do this on your cardio day or at the end of your workout:
- Running on the treadmill increasing the incline every minute until 10 mins.
- Floor Crunch (3-4 sets 10-12 reps)
- Bicycle Crunch(3-4 sets 15-reps each side)
- Run on treadmill at 5% grade for 5 mins
P.S: If your looking for a fun and quick way to lose the belly fat fast. Try out Ortiz Fitness Boot Camp. Theirs only a limited amount of spots left for the 2 Week FREE Trial.
You Can Afford To Eat Healthy After All!
Hey everybody hope you are having a rocking summer and enjoying showing off your beach body which you have worked hard for. Recently I organized a massive healthy food drive at Cadman Park in Brooklyn Heights that benefited “The Helping Hands” Food Pantry In Harlem. The turn out was huge! Over 2 boxes and shopping carts were donated!

One of the reasons I organized the healthy food drive was to help those in low income neighborhoods be exposed to the benefits of taking part in a healthy and active lifestyle. One of the major problems preventing low income residents for partaking in a more healthier lifestyle is the myth that eating healthy is expensive. This simply isn’t true anymore!
I grew up in the projects in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn NY (long before I became a personal trainer) where the cheapest places to eat were often the most fattest. Going to the grocery store to pick up something healthy was way out of my parent’s price range (espically coming with next to nothing from Puerto Rico) so of course they had to settle for the cheapest food that they could get within there budget.
Now more then ever its just as cheap to eat healthy. Watch the video below and you’ll see how it’s just as cheap to get a Whole Wheat Box of Pasta that feeds a family of 4 twice for only $1.99 vs a regular box of pasta for the same price!
AM VS PM Workouts. Which Is Better For You?
Hey everybody hope everyone is gearing up for a fun filled July 4 weekend. Just make sure to make smart healthy choices this weekend when going out.
With summer in full swing a lot of my personal training clients in New York have wanted to adjust their training schedules for morning to evening and vice versa. However they also fear that their bodies might not respond as well to the change in time that they workout and might not get the same benefits. Well I’m here to answer the age old question of which is better to workout AM or PM?
Truthfully both have their benefits and depends on YOU. If you are a morning person then AM workouts would be best suited for you. If your an evening person then PM workouts would be better for you. Now I know what your thinking “Bryan this sounds simple enough but I’m not a morning person but mornings are the only time I can workout. How can I still can get an effective workout in the AM?”
Look I’ll be the 1st to admit I hate mornings. I’m just not a morning person at all and my body takes a little longer to respond to workouts BUT I still get the job done espsically if my schedule is crazy all day. One of the things you must do before you workout in the mornings (or any time for that matter) is have something in your stomach. Now if your are just rolling out of bed and want to hit the gym make sure to have something light such as a banana’s or snack bar. This is essential because you must remember you are fasting for about 7-9 hours. Your body needs the food to give you the energy you need to workout other wise you will be feeling light headed with the possibility of passing out.
However a major benefit of working out in the morning is that after your going to feel so empowered by working out in the morning is that you’ll be less likely to make bad choices when it comes to eating. Another benefit of working out in the mornings is that you get it knocked out the way 1st so this way you don’t have to worry about getting it in later if you are too tired of get stuck at the office. Probably the biggest benefit of working out in the AM is that your metobolism is at its peak. After your done with your morning workout you got a major window to burn fat then any other time during the day. This a perfect time to take advantage of it by having a great post workout shake followed by a protein and fiber rich breakfast. With that you’ll already have 2 of your 6 meals in less then 2 hours and you’ll be less likely to cheat through out the day.
Now if you like to sleep in and are a night owl that perfers to workout in the evening you also have some major advantages as well. First off you’ll get more sleep in the morning and don’t have to rush through your workouts if you wake up late.
Secondly if you have that mind set that your going to workout later that evening you’ll be less likely to eat anything unhealthy (or if you do then you know you’ll be able to burn it off). Most of the time I have found that my clients that workout in the evening love it more because its a great way to relieve stress from their day. Another huge benefit is that most of the time you can make your post workout meal the last one of the day and thus start the next day off right.
Bottom Line: No matter what time you decide to workout the key is to make sure you make every workout count!

Its Your Fault & How To Change NOW!
Summer finally has arrived! Well unofficially but none the less everyone is out enjoying the weather by spending more time outdoors, parks, and the beach. If you’ve been working out vigorously for the past few months you should already have that body you want so congratulations and show it off because you’ve earned it. If you haven’t taken your workout seriously and are ashamed of how you look in your bikini or summer dress I hate to tell you this but IT’S YOUR FAULT!
Now before you get all jumpy at me and start writing me hate mail please take a second to remember you are responsible for your own actions. I don’t want to hear excuses like “O I don’t have the time to workout, something came up, too expensive to workout, Its hard” etc. Does that sound familiar? All those reasons are just excuses that doesn’t justify you not working out.
Here’s the solution to all your problems and excuses:
- I don’t have time to workout: You don’t need to devote an hour to the gym to workout. Hell the most effective workouts only take 30minutes. I’ve found that those who workout for an hour aren’t really working out that hard at all. They are just doing one exercise and either talking or not doing enough. Clients that have used my boxing system have worked are done after 30mins and still see amazing results (partially because theres not much chit chat in between)
- Something came up: Unless you are seriously injured there’s really no excuse
- Too expensive to workout: Did you know that average doctor visit just for a check up can run you at least $250 for only a quick check up thats not including the tests that they actually perform on you. Usually when times get tough the first thing to go is the gym membership or personal trainer. While this is not recommended but you really feel like you must cut that out you still should be working out. If your current gym membership is too high try a boot camp usually those are very cheap and you still get the guidance of a personal trainer. If you must cut that out then try online personal training. You still get the guidance of a personal trainer and customized workouts that you can do on your own. Here’s a great example of online personal training.
- Its too hard to workout: Are you fat right now? Having difficulty putting on those jeans, or going out in public and covering up, having a hard time walking up a flight of stairs? Yes the soreness of working out is part of the game but I’ve spoken to numerous people that said they would rather do that being ashamed of how they look and/or having a difficult time breathing
There you have it. Now that you realized what you did wrong there is no excuse not to start today. Stop feeling sorry and lying to yourself and go out there and get the body of your dreams. You can do it. I believe in you!
Diets Exposed!
With summer upon us everyone is looking for that “edge” to lose the last 5 pounds to get into their bathing suits. Its amazing the lengths some people will go to just to lose the weight quickly and with all the BS out there especially with diets its hard to distinguish fact from fiction.
You’ll be amazed the questions I get asked about these outrageous diets (some of which should be illegal) that promise to lose the most weight in the least amount of time. Like you your probally confused on which “diet’ works best for you and something your going to stick with. I’m going to reveal the truth about which diet works best for you right now. Ready?!
There are no Diet that works!

Ladies & Gentleman eating right isn’t difficult. You can achieve maximum weight loss by just adjusting your current eating habits without dieting. This doesn’t mean if your eating McDonalads everyday you can continue to eat it (thats just foolish & a waste of money). The key is to carefully plan out your meals and adjust your portion sizes accordingly .If you hate eating TOFU then why are you gonna start eating it now? However if you like rice & beans instead of having 3 spoon fulls cut it down to 2 and then eventually 1. See how simple it is?
Here are three tips you can follow right now to help you achceive maxaium weight loss:
- Make sure breakfast is your biggest meal of the day: If you start off your day with with a breakfast that is filling, rich in protein, & fiber chances are you won’t be hungry by the time you get to the office thus avoiding eating that donut with your coffee.
- If you don’t like eating it don’t start eating it now: I can’t tell you how many people get excited about trying something new because they heard it was healthy but then stop because they can’t stand the taste. You should always try to find something new and healthy that you can see yourself eating regularly thats not gonna be a chore for you. Hell you might find that you like carrots and substitute that for the cookies stashed under your desk.
- Prepare Your Meals & Use Smaller Plates: This is probably the most cost effective ways to lose weight. If your
not so much of a cook the best investment you can make is getting a George Foreman grill. Its extremely simple to use, cheap, just defrost the meat and put it on the grill. You’ll end up saving over $200/week on making your own meals at home. What you can also do is buy smaller plates. Unless you are trying to pack on muscle you really don’t need a big plate. Truth be told the bigger the plate is the more your going to put on it, so save yourself the guess work on what the right size is.
